Get comfortable: six month update on Ivy, weekend trips, holidays, UT, friends, family.
A week after Ivy was born we found out that I had melanoma (skin cancer). The next three months were the most difficult of our life, to say the least. We went through radiation and two surgeries and a lot of waiting to find out the results. It was difficult to talk about things like life expectancy, wills, and watch other melanoma patients in the waiting room making scrapbooks for their families. A lot of miracles happened. Mostly in how we found the melanoma, Gabe's connections at the hospital to the melanoma oncology department, our ward's help through it all, and a final result of clear/negative nodes. Can't thank everyone enough for the support- wish I had gotten a picture of everyone that helped.

Gabe's friend at work and the director of melanoma oncology, Dr. McCarron. He gave us his cell phone number to call in case we got online and were self-diagnosing ourselves. He was tall, happy, calm and compassionate. Nurse Sandy was a 24/7 contact and positive support.
After the radiation treatment. Surprised I'm smiling in the picture, it was really painful. Josh, the nuclear med tech, was asked to be his friend's child's god father just that morning. He talked about how expensive that would be for him and he wondered if he should say no. God fathers apparently don't give cheap gifts here. It was a nice distracting conversation.
Gabe and I sat and waited for surgery for a few hours together. We haven't sat and talked and laughed like that for a long time. I was laughing so hard the nurse came and asked if we were fine. It was a nervous hyper feeling.
I wasn't able to walk (from the c-section and the two surgeries in two places) for almost a month. This was our bedtime story routine, at the foot of my bed. It was at this moment I felt like our kids would be fine if the diagnosis wasn't in our favor, with Gabe loving them the way he does.
Elle and Seb soon figured out that I could only give orders from bed, but not follow-through with anything. They were running wild. And really wishing things were back to normal.
Hartricks came to visit from New York. We have missed them, and Port and Little Neck.
Neighbors. Mary Ellen changed my sheets for me a few times. Marion played with Elle and Seb.
The Biffls came up. John played Elle's violin for everyone.
Michelle saved the day, several times.
Chiq and Sarah were life-savers.
Mary came to the rescue many times.
Mary said this is how cowboys eat. She made them do it.
Susan Allred. Eleanor has never had so much fun dressing up.
The Townes. Brother Towne fixed my bathroom light, a chore Gabe just couldn't get to with working and school and being mom and dad.
Few people are as fun as Kristi Birch. It's always so fun with her around.
Our favorite neighbor. She came over one morning on her way out and said, "I have five minutes. What do you need?" She poured everyone a bowl of cereal, changed Ivy's diaper and took the recyling out. Made my whole morning.
Rob McKay. Entertained Elle and Seb one night. Just what we needed- some comic relief.
Paloma drove me to my appointments when I couldn't drive yet. Elle and Seb made TerriLyn pretend she was going in for surgery. Seb told her to take her barium and Elle set her up for an x-ray in the playroom.
I still get weepy when I think of DaShelle sitting with my kids teaching them songs one whole afternoon. I could hear them singing downstairs from my bed.
Aldi and Taylor pushed me around when I went out for the first time to run some errands.

My first time downstairs in a long time. Things were surprisingly totally under control.
When we found out that we didn't have to use our savings for chemo treatments, we went right out and got Gabe a cello, something we've saved for for a long time. It's beautiful. This summer was a wake up call to us that we should spend our limited time and money on things that make us the happiest.

My students parents offered us their summer lake house on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH (What About Bob? On Golden Pond). We had the nicest vacation of our life at Lake W. We came home trying to figure out how to sell our house and move there. It was the best place we've ever visited.
I want to move to Lake W. just for this grocery store. Every isle was lined with mums. Seemed like life at the lake was all-around this great.

We talked with the Polls in UT while we were at Lake W. They said their friends lived on the lake and said we had to go meet them. We met the Rudy's and Bob and Sherrie took us on the longest and best boat ride of our life around all of Lake W. They are great new friends.

The Waterford Fair in Virginia. A new Spencer family October weekend tradition. The best juried fair around. The booth owners were required to have one person selling their goods and one person demonstrating how they made their goods (demonstrations with no electricity required). Elle was sung to for ten whole minutes. She turned to me mid-song and said, "Can we go?" Everyone was standing around watching this guy sing a love song to her.

Another great date. Met Joshua Bell after a concert. Even got his bow hair from the stage (insisted on getting it even though we were told to leave several times for clean-up). We missed his concert the week before due to the worst DC snow storm of the year. The lights were out at the concert hall that night but he performed in the lobby for a few hours for the handful of people that made it to the hall, under the emergency lights. So jealous. Glad we made it to the rescheduling.

The lights were out at the concert hall that night but he performed in the lobby for a few hours for the handful of people that made it to the hall, under the emergency lights. So jealous. Glad we made it to the rescheduling.

miss you guys so much! Even more after seeing all the pictures :) It's been so so long since we were all newlyweds in the Ave's! The kid are adorable as ever and you guys look great too! So so so happy about the positive results from the melanoma- so relieved! We love you guys and hopefully we can see you in person sometime in the next year. We definitely need to come see you!
Love all the pictures. I am so glad that even far, far away from family you have been blessed with soooo many people to look after you. Kudos to Gabe. Work, school and being mom and dad is hard. wow! how long did this post take? that was an amazing journey through your life and I am SO happy that things are good now and that your were so blessed with positive results and so many wonderful people around you. I'm glad you loved The Hershey Pantry too--made me want some stuffed french toast right now! Dave knows Jon Alder (from high school, I think). Funny. Well, Amber, you look beautiful in all these pictures and little Ivy is DARLING! So good to ''catch up" and thanks for sharing ALL those pics!
It's good to see you are getting better. I am so amazed at all you guys are able to accomplish! You take my breath away, and make me really tired just looking at all your pictures! I miss you. I really am inspired by you Amber. You are on my list of AMAZING people.
Thanks for the update! We miss you all. The kids were right here with me looking through all the wonderful memories. I am totally inspired by so much that you have done together as a family and the priceless insight on spending our limited time and money on things that make us happiest. There is so much to be thankful for and happy about.
